Voice Over Internet Protocol or VoIP has revolutionized the telecommunication industry over the past decade yet there are still many common misconceptions about VoIP applications and what benefits they provide. The truth is that VoIP is little more than another medium for transporting voice calls. Packetizing voice and delivering calls over an IP Network does add value for many organizations by cost effectively bridging the gap between users in multiple locations, reducing maintenance costs, and reducing carrier costs.
Many organizations are reducing their carrier expenses by implementing Session Initiated Protocol or SIP Trunking. SIP Trunks allow organizations of all sizes to deliver features such as Caller ID, Direct Inward Dial numbers, Calling Party Number propagation, and others at any scale. In the past ISDN PRI was the preferred method for delivering these features, but for some organizations an ISDN PRI is cost prohibitive and simply not necessary. By implementing SIP trunks we can configure your IP PBX to connect to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) over an IP Network. This eliminates the need for costly termination hardware on the PBX and brings new options for customers who are looking for redundancy at the carrier level at a price they can afford.
Both technologies have changed the way the telecommunications industry provides services to customers and both require a partner who understands the benefit and challenges associated with implementing them. If you are considering a VoIP or SIP implementation BSB Communications, Inc. can help. We implemented our first VoIP application in 1999 and have spent the years since bringing solutions to our customers that provide real value.
